VG’s great children’s drawing cover
Five years ago, at the SNDS Copenhagen Crash seminar, the Norwegian newspaper VG‘s editor-in-chief Torry Pedersen told the audience that at VG they didn’t really care much about design, with a cacophony of different typefaces in the paper as a result.

Hedy Lamarr x 3 (NO)
The Austrian-American actress Hedy Lamarr (1913-2000) has been an inspiration to me for many years. In this painting from 2003 I have placed her aristocratic, cool, proud face in three copies beside one another – in the middle of the canvas. The yellowish background with the red transparent strokes of paint gives her room to be in – interrupted only by a dark rectangle to the left and a red one to the right – and a torn piece of a Polish box of cigarettes and the word “NO” – perhaps a hint to the fact that Hedy herself was a strong yet sensitive person who dared say “No” more than once in her extraordinary life.
Lars Pryds: “Hedy Lamarr x 3 (NO)”, 2003.
Acrylic/collage on canvas, 80 x 60 cm. DKK 7.000,-
This is the first post in a series labeled “Artwork of the week” where I will post a painting, drawing, collage or graphic with a short commentary. The intention is to post one every week. The posts are tagged Artwork of the week

DKK 7.000,-

News Design jury at work in Billund
I’m in Billund, at Hotel Legoland, where the jury for the “Best of Scandinavian News Design 2013″ competition is meeting to find this years winners. 763 entries in the print categories and 65 in online will be judged by the hard working jury. The winners will be announced at the “WRONG…” seminar and workshop to be held in Copenhagen later in the year. See more on snds.org
Here are a few glimpses from the work of the jury, and a comment from Olli Nurminen, who is the chairman of the “Overall Design” category for print.

Now selling: “Break-up”, 24 drawings by Lars Pryds. These pencil drawings were all created in late 1987. Although this was more than 25 years ago, they were not shown to the public until recently, when 18 of the 24 drawings in the series were exhibited in the third of three “Fifty/Fifty” exhibitions, celebrating my 50th birthday and the publication of my book “Pages of a Non-Existent Diary“.

About “Break-up”:
The time was a time for break-up (hence the title) – I had just graduated from design school; Lisbeth had moved to the Højer in the very south of Denmark to lead a teachers’ college; but within the month of December we had moved to Aarhus to begin a new life as freelancers from our own studio. The drawings depict my nearest surroundings and things in my old studio/apartment – maybe in an attempt to keep the memory of a place I would soon leave behind and never be able to re-visit again.
These highly personal notes (they should have been included in Pages …, perhaps, but they weren’t) are now all for sale. The simple, matt black aluminum frame shown in the image above is included in the price.

World’s Best Designed Newspapers announced
“What distinguishes a World’s Best-Designed™ Newspaper? A culture of careful editing of all content that puts the reader first — through stringent attention to detail.”
“Too many designers are not driven by the content in front of them; they’re just moving elements around pages. In the best-designed publications, that connection jumps off the page.”
These were the words which SND, Society for News Design, today used to announce the winners in this year’s World’s Best Designed™ Newspapers competition. Scandinavia is – once again – among the winners: Politiken (DK) and Dagens Nyheter (S) wins the prestigious title alongside two German papers, Die Zeit and Welt am Sonntag, and The Grid from Canada.
It’s a first time for Dagens Nyheter, but Politiken also won in 2006 and 2011. Congratulations to all winners!

SND34 judges pick World’s Best-Designed™ Newspapers
Even though there were some great work shown also by runner-ups, the judges lament the absence of American papers among the winners, and see “another disturbing trend: the lack of illustration and especially information graphics in so many newspapers. These are the tools that newspapers can use to distinguish their content from the pack and add context and understanding to their report.”
In other words: Basic routine work may get the job done and the paper on to the streets, but it won’t win you any awards.
Here is what great news design looks like:
